Visiting one-on-one with patients:
“Volunteering with the patients at St Mary’s has changed my life. I graduated this year in Engineering. Because of my experience volunteering here, I have applied for Med School and have been accepted. I one day hope to return to work at St. Mary's of the Lake.”
“I enjoy talking with my patients, it is so rewarding knowing I can make them smile.”
“I look forward to my visits, all of our patients are wonderful.”
“I had no idea how attached I would become with the patients, it has been such a rewarding experience.”
Volunteering at the Day Hospital at St. Mary's of the Lake hospital
“Patients are a joy to work with and I enjoy all my hours with them. This program allowed me to branch out and really get to know most of the patients on an individual basis through various activities and our casual conversations.”
“I enjoy the conversations with patients. They are willing to talk and I am here to listen to them. Some expressed the desire to extend their stay and were often saddened upon their departure of their program.”
Volunteering in Palliative Care
“I get to hold the hands of those that are dying, hear their stories, I receive advice, I received the meaning of my life back. People wonder why I spend so much time and effort with those who are going to die anyways. My answer ‘We are all going to die, isn’t it good to know that people are there for us, even beyond hope?’”
“I enjoy the opportunity to visit in the patients’ rooms, to sit and chat and make a difference in their lives.”
“The patients and families are so appreciative of what I do.”
Sharing Music and Memories
“I was playing the fiddle for a patient last year, when he suddenly began to sob. I stopped playing but he explained that his grandfather used to play for him when he was ill and he urged me to continue. This experience has actually been on of many which has inspired me to pursue a career in medicine.”
Volunteering at the Find Your Way Information Desk at St. Mary's of the Lake hospital
“My husband was a patient here at St Mary’s of the Lake Hospital. I was so impressed with the care he received, I wanted to give back to the hospital to help others.”
