Support and resources for clients and families

The Empowerment and Clinical Education Centre at Providence Care Mental Health Services opened in 2002 to support patients and families living with a severe mental illness. The Centre promotes and provides:

Person-centred care
Person-centred care means that you - not the system - come first. We hold regular focus groups and meet with individuals and families to encourage you to make your voice heard. Your experiences, concerns, and ideas for improvement are an invaluable resource in improving the system. All feedback is confidential.

Services for inpatients and families
Hospitalization can be a frightening and disorienting experience. The Centre can help you find your way during your hospital stay. We provide information about the hospital and its services, mental illness, treatment, and resources. We support you as you take an active role in planning your care and discharge, as you work through problems and conflicts, and deal with fears about leaving the hospital. If needed, we help family and staff be sensitive to your experience.

Access to community resources
As you prepare to return to the community, the Empowerment and Clinical Education Centre can connect you with resources and support groups. We make referrals to the Psychiatric Patient Advocate Office, and community services provided by Providence Care Mental Health Services and other agencies as appropriate.

Education to change old attitudes and beliefs
The Empowerment and Clinical Education Centre is the Kingston organizer of NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) training programs for families and providers. We also host guest speakers and special events. Informal education is offered to individuals, families and groups on an ongoing basis.
