 In the final stages of life, we believe that patients and their family members have the potential to plan, teach, console, enjoy, and hope. The Palliative Care unit at Providence Care’s St. Mary's of the Lake Hospital site has six private rooms that are beautifully decorated and grouped around a fully equipped family room.
Families may stay overnight in the Palliative Care Family Room or request a cot in the patient's room.
The total care concept is provided through a multidisciplinary team with active participation by the patient, family, friends and volunteers. Therapists are available to improve comfort and quality of life in such areas as mobility, seating, adaptations for activities of daily living, swallowing, communication, recreation, finance, psychological or family concerns. Pastoral care is also available.
Bereavement follow-up and support is offered to family and friends by volunteers who have been trained in palliative care and understand the total care concept of the program. A bereavement support group is facilitated by social workers; contact information can be found below.

Admission Criteria:
For persons in the final stages of a terminal illness, for whom no life-prolonging interventions are available, offered, or expected. They should be patients whose nursing care needs can no longer be met in the community and who would benefit from a team approach to intensive symptom assessment and management. Admission is also considered for short-term respite or symptom management.
Referrals:
A referral from the family physician or a health care agency is required. The patient is assessed prior to admission by the physician in charge of the unit and by a nurse.
