Three geriatric psychiatry units are located at Providence Care Mental Health Services for older persons with severe mental illnesses, cognitive impairment, and behavioural problems. Younger persons with age-related cognitive impairment and behavioural disturbance may also be admitted.
- Geriatric Psychiatry Admissions Unit
This is the admissions unit for inpatient geriatric psychiatry. The 24-bed unit provides treatment and rehabilitation for elderly persons suffering from dementia with behavioural disturbance. Once stabilized, patients are transferred to the most appropriate setting, usually a long-term care facility.
Patients who need a longer hospital stay for behavioural rehabilitation may be transferred to one of the following continuing care units. The goal continues to be behavioural stabilization and rehabilitation in preparation for discharge to an appropriate setting.
- Continuing Care - Male
This is a secure 27-bed unit for older men who have complex psychiatric problems and challenging behaviours.
- Geriatric Psychiatry Continuing Care
This 26-bed unit cares for older patients with psychiatric disorders and/or cognitive impairment who are also experiencing behavioural disturbance and complex age-related physical changes. The infirmary for Mental Health Services is housed within the unit.
