Patient Safety Indicators

Kingston’s university hospitals - Providence Care, Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital -are committed to ensuring patient safety. One way we do this is by monitoring our infection rates. Most infections in hospital settings happen through the spread of microorganisms such as bacteria or viruses. Many of these microorganisms are also found in the community, at home, in schools and workplaces.

Providence Care’s website reports the rate and number of cases of Clostridium difficile (C. difficile), Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) at our two hospital sites: St. Mary’s of the Lake and Mental Health Services. This is in keeping with new provincial requirements for hospitals to publicly report on a set of patient safety indicators.

In April 2009, rates for Hand Hygiene Compliance will be added to the site. Providence Care is not reporting on the Hospital Standardized Mortality Ration, Ventilator-associated pneumonia or Central line infections, as these indicators do not apply to the patients or type of care provided at St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital and Mental Health Services.

The public can also access Providence Care’s Patient Safety Indicator data on the website of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care at www.ontario.ca/patientsafety.

Providence Care's Infection Control team provides the following brochures for your information:

Clostridium difficile

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE)
